Una Notte nell'Abbazia di San Galgano
Venerdì 1 agosto 2025, dopo il tramonto, si è svolta una visita particolare all'Abbazia di San Galgano, sita nel comune di Chiusdino, in provincia di Siena, in Toscana.
Archeologhe e archeologi dell’Università di Siena, in abiti medievali, hanno guidato i partecipanti tra le antiche e imponenti navate, alla luce soffusa delle fiaccole, narrando i segreti della suggestiva abbazia cistercense.
Edificata tra il 1220 e il 1288 circa, l’Abbazia di San Galgano è uno dei più affascinanti esempi di architettura gotico-cistercense in Italia. Priva di tetto ma con le sue mura, navate e abside ancora perfettamente leggibili, regala un impatto visivo potente e misterioso. Negli anni ’80 del Novecento, fu scelta dal regista russo Andrej Tarkovskij come una delle location del film Nostalghia.
Ogni estate, i ricercatori dell’Università di Siena conducono scavi archeologici nelle aree che un tempo ospitavano il chiostro, il refettorio e le cucine. Le indagini hanno restituito preziose informazioni sulla vita quotidiana dei monaci, tra cui — in maniera sorprendente per un’abbazia nell’entroterra senese — il consumo regolare di pesce. L’esperienza di scavo viene condivisa con il pubblico attraverso tour guidati e attività di living history in costume storico, che permettono di restare aggiornati sui lavori svolti.
Negli ultimi anni, parallelamente agli scavi, sono stati avviati anche importanti interventi di restauro, come il recupero della sacrestia inferiore e dei suoi affreschi trecenteschi, il restauro di due guglie originarie della facciata e il progetto di riapertura del dormitorio monastico, che amplierà gli spazi visitabili.

One Night at the Abbey of San Galgano
On Friday, August 1, 2025, after sunset, a special visit took place at the Abbey of San Galgano, located in the municipality of Chiusdino, in the province of Siena, Tuscany.
Archaeologists from the University of Siena, dressed in medieval costumes, guided participants through the ancient and imposing naves, illuminated by the soft glow of torches, revealing the secrets of the evocative Cistercian abbey.
Built between around 1220 and 1288, the Abbey of San Galgano is one of the most fascinating examples of Gothic-Cistercian architecture in Italy. Roofless yet with its walls, naves, and apse still perfectly intact, it offers a powerful and mysterious visual impact. In the 1980s, it was chosen by Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky as one of the filming locations for Nostalghia.
Every summer, researchers from the University of Siena carry out archaeological excavations in the areas that once housed the cloister, the refectory, and the kitchens. These investigations have provided valuable insights into the monks’ daily life, including — surprisingly for an abbey in the Sienese hinterland — the regular consumption of fish. The excavation experience is shared with the public through guided tours and living history activities in historical costume, allowing visitors to follow the ongoing work.
In recent years, alongside the excavations, important restoration projects have been undertaken, such as the recovery of the lower sacristy and its 14th-century frescoes, the restoration of two original spires from the façade, and the planned reopening of the monks’ dormitory, which will expand the visitable spaces.
